Nail the Motorsport Panning Shot

We take you trackside and walk through how to capture a sharp car with a motion-blurred background using iPhone, the REEFLEX Pro Camera app, and the Ultra Telephoto 300–600mm lens.

Trackside workflow

A Real Motorsport Shooting Session

For this masterclass, we went to Oulton Park Circuit in the UK during a classic sports car event and built the full panning-shot workflow around a real trackside session.

We start with frames that are too clean and too fast, then work through position, framing, shutter speed, filters, burst shooting, and RAW capture until the image starts to feel fast.

Masterclass flow

From Position to Motion Blur

We do not jump straight to the final settings. The masterclass follows the process from the first trackside decisions to the final panning result.

01

Choose the Position

We look for track-level, side-on or slightly angled positions near corner exits, where the car has room to move through the frame.

02

Leave Room for Motion

Breathing room around the vehicle helps the motion blur read more clearly and makes the final image feel faster.

03

Work in RAW, Manual and Burst

RAW keeps the workflow flexible while using manual shutter speed and burst shooting during the panning attempts.

04

Slow the Shutter

When the shutter speed is too fast, the car may be sharp, but the background does not streak enough to show speed.

05

Cut the Light

In bright conditions, we bring in an ND64 filter to reduce the light and slow the shutter down to a usable 1/100s.

06

Refine the Shot

From there, we keep refining the pan until the car stays sharp and the background starts to move.

The debrief

We Also Show What Went Wrong

Instead of hiding the imperfect frames, we look back at one of the real panning attempts and break down what happened: the RAW file was underexposed, the wrong ND filter stayed on, and the shots were not checked between bursts.

From there, we explain what should have happened instead: bump the ISO and clean up the noise later, or swap filters sooner when the light changes.

The value is not just seeing the final settings. It is seeing the technique fail, get corrected, and improve in real time.
