What the announcement changes
Our earlier discussion centred on three possible main-camera changes: a larger sensor, a stacked sensor and variable aperture. This reaction turns to the aperture and new Pro Controls, while noting that a larger sensor and stacked architecture were not highlighted in the presentation. The next step is to examine what the new controls mean for the images themselves, rather than draw conclusions from the announcement alone.
Variable aperture and RAW image quality
The new main camera offers four aperture settings, from f/1.48 to f/4.0. The wider opening should let more light reach the sensor, while stopping down increases depth of field. The important question for us is how each setting will affect image quality, particularly when shooting RAW without computational processing to compensate.
ƒ/1.48 Maximum light. Around 50 percent better low-light performance — great for indoor scenes. Take better-quality Night mode photos faster.
